First, our prayers goes out to all of the people that experience this year disaster tornadoes. This has been one of the storming years of tornadoes touching down. The La Niña may be able to help us understand the reason for all of this. La Niña is defined as unusually cold temperatures in the eastern equatorial Pacific sea surface. When combined with the warmer temperatures in the Gulf of Mexico, the trapped air begins to rotate horizontally between the two air masses and a tornado is formed. The difference between La Niña and an "average" tornado is that La Niña distinguishes itself by exceedingly colder ocean temperatures and a more vigorous jet stream. Scientists have concluded that this may be the reason for the record number of tornadoes we've seen this spring.

The average number of Tornadoes for the Month of April in the last ten years is 161. The National Weather service, in a preliminary estimation, has stated that there have been 600 tornadoes during the Month of April 2011, a significant increase.
